Spade

Spade and her sister Bob came to us back in 1995.  They arrived at our home, courtesy of my parents, with coccidia, ear mites, tapes worms, and infested with fleas.  Their first visit with the veterinarian was a whopper.  The kittens each had distinct personalities.  Bob was sweet, loving, and a lap cat.  Spade on the other hand was like a rabid Tasmanian Devil.  Bob kept her easy going; life is good and fun attitude.  Spade on the other hand, lived life on her own terms.  She only wanted to be touched when it suited her and had her “I am a feral cat” moment all too frequently.  Both cats led an adventurous life.  My husband was serving in the Marine Corps at the time we got them, so they had an eventful life.  Bob liked to ride in the truck, Spade, on the other hand really frowned upon it.  She would hyper salivate and occasionally let loose with other bodily functions, none of which were very pleasant or appealing.  After my husband’s retirement, we packed up and moved to Colorado.  Both of the girls were finally happy to know that we would not be moving anytime soon.

The girls’ first visit to High Plains Veterinary Hospital, and Dr. McKenney, was back in 2009.  They we in for their senior check up.  Bob was diagnosed with hyperthyroidism and Spade was in good shape.  Bob fought the good fight; however we lost her in 2010.

Spade’s yearly visit was upon us, so in to Dr. McKenney we went.  We received some somewhat sad news; Spade was in the early stages of kidney failure.  With the help of Dr. McKenney, we switched her food over to K/D and set up a recheck in six months.  Boy how the time flies.  Spade had her recheck, and good news, her kidney function had improved some.  She is now scheduled to go back in one year, unless a problem arises, or her condition deteriorates.

My husband and I cannot impress upon cat owners enough to keep up with annual checkup for our senior feline pets.  I think with early detection and the help of Dr. McKenney, Spade will be with us for another few years.  She will continue to keep our lives interesting with her very unique personality.

Thank you again to Dr. McKenney and all of the great staff at High Plains Veterinary Clinic for helping us take care of our little devil in disguise.
